There are so many details we have sorted through (and will continue to sort through throughout the trip), so we wanted to share a few logistical details for those who are curious:
What’s the general outline of the trip?
To start, we have a target we are aiming for, but we are very open and flexible to pivot if we feel called to do so. Our target is as follows: we will begin with a road trip from Denver to Montreal, Canada, where we will ship our motorcycle sidecar on our plane to Paris. Once we arrive in Paris, our journey in Europe will begin. We are planning to spend the summer and fall in Europe, head into northern Africa in the fall, and then cross the Mediterranean to Greece and Turkey. From Turkey, we will head into Central Asia and eventually reach Nepal and India. From India, we will continue into Southeast Asia and eventually take a boat to Australia. After Australia, we will take a boat to New Zealand. From New Zealand, we are planning to find a cargo ship that is restocking Antarctica and then ending in Argentina. Once we reach the southern part of South America, we will head due north. Along the way, we plan to fly into Egypt, Israel, South Africa, and a few other places, but we will find a place to store our motorcycle sidecar during those times.
How are you staying in the Schengen Area longer than 90 days?
We obtained a long-term French visa, which allows us to stay in the Schengen Area for up to a year.
Where do you plan to sleep?
We are planning a combination of hostels, camping, staying with family and friends, Airbnbs, hotels, and staying with people we meet along the way.
What medical insurance are you using?
WorldTrips offered the most affordable medical insurance with the best coverage for us.
Did you have to get additional vaccines for this trip?
For various parts of the world, yes. So far, we have vaccines for typhoid, yellow fever, Hep A, and rabies. We are also up to date on our COVID-19 vaccine and booster. As we prepare to head into Asia, we will need a typhoid booster and plan to get the Japanese encephalitis vaccine.
Where did you get the sweet bike?
We got our Ural from Ural Colorado. Fun fact: it was actually our wedding getaway vehicle before we owned it.
How are you getting the bike to Europe?
Motorcycle Express is a company that helps ship bikes via airplane from Montreal, Canada, to Paris, France. The airline is Air Transat.
What motorcycle insurance will you need?
This varies by country or region throughout the world. For our first stretch in Europe, we have European Green Card insurance and will purchase additional insurance at borders for countries not covered by the Green Card.
