The Kinabatangan River is known for its' diverse wildlife and came highly recommended to us. We ventured off for a 3-day river safari that included 2 afternoon boat rides, 1 night boat ride, 1 early morning boat ride, and a jungle trek. On the river, we saw so many beautiful and incredible animals but didn't capture too many photos with our iPhones since the photos wouldn't turn out too great. The jungle trek did not have as many animals compared to the boat rides. This area of the jungle is known for their tiger leeches so we wore long pants, long socks, and tucked in our shirts hoping to avoid any blood suckers during the jungle trek. Thankfully we made it out with no leeches, the guide found one on him though! I was really really happy about this even though leeches aren't dangerous/poisonous. The idea of a leech on my body just makes my skin crawl.

Throughout our time on the river, we saw: rhinoceros hornbills (these are quite rare!), oriental pied hornbills, black hornbills, a wrinkled hornbill, proboscis monkeys, long-tail macaque monkeys, pig-tailed macaque monkeys, saltwater crocodiles, buffy fish owls, a black and red boradbill bird, a little snake, multiple kingfisher birds, a Borneo tractor millipede, an orangutan and their baby, and many other birds.

Pig-tailed macaque monkeys:

We spent most of our outings with Gina and Cherry, both from Singapore. Gina is a wildlife biologist and Cherry is an educator at the Natural History museum in Singapore. They knew nearly all of the species of animals around, it was very impressive!
