We traded in Domino for a couple of scooters to mob around the island on. Just kidding, Domino is still resting in Thailand. It was such an epic day on the scooters seeing the island and all of the small villages and farming.

The beaches on the north were absolutely stunning: white sand and crystal clear turquoise water. If we could go back, we would have stayed up in the north. It was a lot less busy than Stone Town too.

A lot of the kids would see us riding by and would yell “jambo!!” with a big wave which is their greeting. It was sobering seeing other young kids that would hold their hands out with palms up and say “money” or “dollar”. There was a lot of poverty in Zanzibar (and a lot of other parts of Africa).

Zanzibar was the main slave trading location in Eastern Africa. The old slave market in Stone Town includes this memorial now; the chains around their necks are original chains used for bondage. It was extremely sobering to learn the history and cruelty that went on here. The photo 2nd from the bottom shows the memorial.
