Austin found a really incredible caving experience for us in Mulu National Park. We started in one cave's large cavern and made our way through tight squeezes, massive openings, steep paths, and a river to enter a separate cave's large cavern. It was a truly spectacular day!
There were 3 "tight squeeze" sections where your body (and not much more) was the size of the opening to wiggle through. One squeeze led to a "climbing wall" with a rock wall behind you so you were pinned between two walls. This was nice because you could push back on the wall behind you for a rest but it was overall still challenging to down climb. Another squeeze led to a blind, backwards down climb where the guide helped with vocal cues to guide your foot placements, he was very helpful, phew. There were some sections where we would walk down steep, dirt and rock walls and use a rope walking backwards. We saw a few big spiders, some large centipedes, and many bats. I was prepared mentally to see a snake but we did not see one.
It was so much fun scrambling and climbing in the cave, Austin and I definitely enjoyed it all and had huge smiles on our faces nearly the entire time. We ended the caving in the most refreshing way possible: a big river float. The last quarter of the cave was a river float so we all jumped in and floated the river for a few minutes, it was refreshing and the water was so clear and beautiful. Another cave we had explored in Thailand had super murky water and you couldn't see anything in it so it was much more relaxing and enjoyable to be able to see to the bottom and if there were any animals lurking in the waters or not.
We had 3 guides and were joined by 2 other cavers (Melanie and Maarten, a Belgium couple). The Belgium couple was on the big Pinnacles hike we did a couple of days before and were very keen on joining the caving.
