Copy/paste journal entry bullets from day #1 in the Drake Passage:

  • Steering the ship was absolutely incredible. From the stern (back of the ship), where the helm is, you can see the ship move and bob/flux with the waves and swell. It moved me to nearly tears to see the power of the sea and also thinking about where I was and what I was doing
  • The Drake actually hasn’t been too bad. The swells and waves are big in my opinion but the crew said we are having pristine weather for the Drake and it could be A LOT worse. It is crazy because everyone is feeling so seasick even though the weather is "calm"
  • The boat moves a lotttttt with each swell so everyone is walking very sideways which is pretty wild to witness
  • The seasickness medicine is unreal, it’s helping me a lot (haven't thrown up, yay!) but it makes me so so sleepy
  • I felt very confident steering and Captain Moritz gave me a big thumbs up, score!
  • Austin has been out super seasick nearly all day which is a bummer. I feel bad for him but also don’t because he chose not to take the medicine and wanted to “feel the full effect of the Drake”. He sure is feeling it all...
  • Our shifts today were: 00:00-4:00, 12:00-14:00, and 20:00-24:00. I am so dead and exhausted. I took two 2ish-hr naps between 14:00-19:00 and they were really needed  --- we are paying to do this..crazy
  • I slept from 4:30-7:30, 14:30-16:30, and 17:00-19:00; it’s a wacky sleep schedule that changes daily since our shifts change daily
  • Captain Moritz is really nice, I’m excited to talk with him more in the bridge/captains area
  • I feel sick, I need sleep, I am still surprised we are doing this (but in a very excited way!)

The Bridge: the Captains are here while on shift watching the radars, weather, and overall running the ship and crew. This is Captain Moritz and Dan (second captain):
