Kota Kinabalu is known for their affordable fresh seafood and their seafood markets so we decided to visit one our first night in KK. Similar to other coastal cities of the world, you get to pick out your own fish and other seafood items. The 'restaurants' have an open air grill and kitchen right next to the seafood display where they prepare everything fresh.
Austin, Beau, and I shared a large fish and 2 big squid. Something I remember learning from our fish market days in Morocco was to check how cloudy the fish's eyes are. If the eyes are clear and look crisp, the fish is fresh and was caught that day. If the fish eyes are cloudy/glazed over, the fish could be a day or 2 old so not as fresh. The fish we chose was very meaty and tasty but our favorite dish was the squid; it was BBQed with some flavorful spices and was very delicious!
