Chengdu is known for pandas! There are multiple research centers around the city that have teeny, tiny baby pandas, giant pandas, and red pandas. We went to an enormous center and explored for nearly half a day. We could have spent many more hours there but we had more to do in the city that afternoon. We watched the giant pandas eat bamboo, the red pandas climb in trees and scurry around, and the infant pandas lay nearly motionless since they were sleeping. The red pandas to us, were more of a mix between a fox and a raccoon. They were quite cute to watch frolic around and they were much more active than the giant pandas. Both of our favorites to watch were the giant pandas while they ate. They would take the bamboo and both of their hands and break it on top of their heads or on top of their noses. They would then peel off the outside skin so they can eat the inside.
