Chaitén Volcano is a volcano in northern Patagonia that is still active today. The most recent big eruption was in 2008 and the ash column from the eruption was about 10 miles high! Chile’s emergency evacuation group evacuated about 5,000 people in the area during the eruption. The small town of Chaitén and surrounding areas were covered in ash and after the volcano was finished erupting, heavy rains came which then flooded and damaged the city. What a tragic time. The volcano itself looked like a big scree field with rock debris but it was still interesting to check out.
